Supervised automation

Supervised Agent Systems

Design agent systems around named tools, triggers, approved knowledge, permissions, human approvals, bounded actions, and an inspectable audit trail.

Unscoped automation can take actions nobody can reconstruct, authorize, or reverse.

Agent systems are useful when a workflow has a named owner, a limited set of tools, and a human decision at every consequential step.

A bounded action loop

  • Name the tools the agent may use and the systems those tools cannot reach.
  • Start only from an explicit human request or a documented trigger.
  • Retrieve knowledge from an approved source subset and retain its provenance.
  • Apply permissions to both the acting user and the agent identity.
  • Require approval before a consequential, external, or irreversible action.
  • Record the input, tool call, decision, reviewer, and result in an audit trail.

Where the pattern fits

  • Research triage: A reviewer owns the question and the agent prepares source-linked options. Boundary: The agent does not publish findings or contact external parties on its own.
  • Exception routing: Known rules and accountable owners already exist for the exception types. Boundary: The agent routes and explains the case; it does not make the customer commitment.

Not included by default

  • No productized connector catalog is implied by a described tool pattern.
  • No unsupervised operation, universal task coverage, or hidden system access.
  • A prototype workflow is not evidence of production reliability.

Synthetic agent action loop

Synthetic illustration of the design sequence. It uses no client, dashboard, or production trace.
